Miami, Florida, August 27, 2018- Residential Plaza at Blue Lagoon is an assisted living community that provides an affordable home with supported living services allowing older adults to live in a safe, caring and supportive environment while maintaining their dignity, independence, and purpose. Residential Plaza’s commitment to person-centered care values the uniqueness of each person promoting a sense of purpose.
Assisted living communities provide a home-like environment in the least restrictive setting to older adults. The communities can range from six to several hundred residents residing in the same community. Assisted living communities offer essential services like housing, meals, personal care, medication management, social and leisure activities.
The assisted living environment in Florida is currently going through a transition phase which has challenges but at the same time offers opportunities. Changes are occurring at a fast pace for an industry that serves a population that should be dealing with the least amount of change. There are regulatory and legislative changes, government assistance freeze and reductions, and Health Plan challenges but at the same time there is an opportunity to grow the business and expand to serve the upcoming baby boomer generation.
After Hurricane Irma hit Florida in the fall of 2017, it knocked out power to a Broward County nursing home leaving resident in sweltering heat, 12 died. The state passed a law in March 2017 requiring nursing homes and assisted living facilities to have a plan to evacuate residents or have generators. Gov. Rick Scott and Miami-Dade’s newly appointed emergency operations chief, Frank Rollason are proactively working with local officials to ensure fixes and new regulations are taking place for this season.
Residential Plaza at Blue Lagoon is currently in the process of finalizing Hurricane Irma’s repairs and completed minor adjustments to the Disaster Plan to continue improving the services offered to our residents. “We continue to adjust and reduce damage risk and improve resident safety,” said Barbara Galindo, Residential Plaza at Blue Lagoon’s Administrator.
“Residential Plaza’s Disaster Plan is designed based on the community’s resident population, building structure, and the organization’s strengths and weaknesses. Each community should develop an Emergency Disaster Plan that works best for their facility”, said Barbara Galindo.
